Image description: A man with dark hair, wearing a red t-shirt and dark wash jeans, stands in an apartment with wooden floors. Behind him are book shelves, a large floor lamp and a table and chair. There is a red patterned rug on the floor. The room is dark with a small amount of light falling on the man and the floor in front of him from an unseen window.

THE CHAINS is performance in the shape of a personality test, a story in 20 questions about the start of the new millennium; about Terror, Love, Power, the Common Sense Revolution, and a teen Antigone production. The people in the audience find their way through the questions and each one circles the answer they think is most correct. Then, all together, they learn what their results mean.

Working with the form of the personality test means this is a piece about You, meaning, in other words, that it’s about certain spaces-between: like the space between who You are and what You’re like, between what You read and what You think it means, between the way You come-of-age and the way You go-to-hell. This one’s about You, meaning, more precisely, that it’s a story. And what’s the difference between a story and a test?
